Rollforward is done by background process called SMON ,and usually occurs at instance recovery "eg. shutdown abort" .Rollforward is done by applying the commited transactions at redologs. on the other hand rollback is done by background process called "PMON" which flushes out any incomplete or uncommited transactions.which this happens when the communication between user process and server prosees is killed because of unusual shudown of the database or the session is killed at OS level using kill -9 command or what ever
