first i need to explain the diference between backup and recovery.
backup is the operation of making a copy of the datafiles and controlfiles and redo log files to be ready to do the operation of the restore and it is mean put the files in thier own location to finaly get the rdbms process know by thier existance, to make easy for you this a video explain every thing about it.
