-you must upgrade your oracle 9i database to patchset 8 (9.2.8)

-install oracle 10g release 2 software
-run database upgrade assistant from Oracle 10g R2 and choose the Oracle 9i (9.2.8) home to upgrade
-follow steps in the database upgrade assistant
-it will now be upgraded to Oracle 10g R2
-compile any invalid objects inside your database.
-now you can delete your oracle 9i software as it is not needed
